Up the Gorge (Day 1) This view from the dock shows a thick, sheltered forest withering to tundra as the gorge of Western Brook Pond rises from near sea level to 700 meters (about 2300 feet). A long cascade of water over a slope of granite is clearly visible and runs through the heart of the most difficult section of the climb. Though this watercourse has carved a broad bed of tumbled stones into the forest floor, it never reaches the pond as surface water.
